Measure spans on rowboats directly and precisely with no error prone calculations
The Self-Centering Span Gauge was developed to speed up the process of accurately measuring spans on most types of rowboats.
Measuring the spans of a complete eight can now be done in around 2 minutes compared with the 15+ minutes it takes using a tape measure. The gauge is simply placed across the boat, the sliding stop is moved against the boat, and the position of the pin is read against the scale. Mental arithmetic and constant re-checking are no longer required!
The self-centering span gauge is supplied in a sturdy polypropylene housing. The complete user instructions are printed on this housing.
Accuracy: The gauge can allow you to easily achieve an accuracy of 2mm or less.
Range: From 350 to 750mm
Boat types: In general the gauge works best where a tape measure would have been used previously. If the oarlocks/swivels are much higher than the gunnels/saxboards, which is generally the case with sculling boats, the tool can't give accurate readings. However if the sculling boat has a wing rigger you can often measure to the centre of the pin underneath the rigger.
We do not recommend span settings but information is available on the Internet and the book ‘Nuts & Bolts Guide to Rigging’ covers the subject in some detail.
Size: 745mm x 65mm x 30mm
